NOTE: The Monument Committee made its final recommendation to the Board of Supervisors on March 16, 2021. Read the full text of its recommendation here, or find it in Committee Meeting Documents folder. The Committee’s work is now complete, and no additional meetings are expected.
On Nov. 17, 2020, the Board of Supervisors appointed a committee to review and provide recommendations for the monument located in front of the Clarke County Circuit Court courthouse. The Monument Committee is tasked with developing a recommendation to the Board on what actions, if any, should be taken concerning the statue. The recommendation should take into account the historical context of the statue, the legal opinion issued by the County Attorney on the ownership issue, and input from various stakeholder groups in the county. The Board desires a recommendation that has broad community support and will move the community forward in a united manner.

In 2020, architectural historian Maral Kalbian researched the Confederate monument to determine its exact origin and its ownership. Watch a video recording of Kalbian’s Sept. 15, 2020, presentation to the Board of Supervisors, “Clarke County’s Confederate Monument: A Brief History.”
