County Administration, 101 Chalmers Court, Suite B, Berryville, VA 22611
Purpose:
The traditional board form of government under which Clarke County currently operates was established by the Virginia Constitution in 1870. Under this form of government, the Board of Supervisors is the policy-making body of the county and is officially known as the Clarke County Board of Supervisors. It is vested with all policy-making powers and responsibilities conferred by general law on county governing bodies. The Board's administrative responsibilities relate generally to overseeing the implementation and administration of policies through an appointed County Administrator.
An integral part of the Board of Supervisor's office is the Clerk/Deputy Clerk to the Board. The Clerk/Deputy is responsible for maintaining all official records of the Board and coordinating the operations of the Board office. Any citizen who wishes to bring a matter to the Board's attention may do so by contacting the Deputy Clerk at 955-5175 or by appearing and making a short statement under "Citizens Comments" at Board meetings. Recorded information on Board actions or agendas can be found in the County Administrator's Office, 101 Chalmers Court, Suite B, 2nd Floor, Berryville, VA 22611.
Membership: The Code of Virginia provides that each county be governed by a board of supervisors which is elected by qualified voters. The Clarke County Board of Supervisors is composed of five members, one from each magisterial district: Berryville, Buckmarsh/Blue Ridge, Millwood/Pine Grove, Russell, and White Post. Supervisors are elected for concurrent four-year terms. The election of supervisors is held as a part of the State's general election in November of odd-numbered years. At the first meeting of the year, the Board organizes itself and selects two members to serve as chair and vice-chair.
